Today was different...woke up earlier than usual..because I slept very fitfully.
Like Scarlett O'Hara says," Tomorrow is another day" . But I wish we could turn back the clock or atleast fast forward four years.
Neither choice is possible so we have to look what us in front of us in the eye and go forward.
What happened yesterday flies in the face of everything we've come to expect out of an election.
Fairness was one thing that wasn't to be seen. Political experience, knowledge of policy, world affairs, economics, prior experience ..nothing mattered.Pandering to a narrow( in hindsight, not so narrow) band of disenfranchised citizens by stoking their paranoia and offering an( ineffective) salve brought them all to the voting booth. This is something one expects from a third world country...I can attest to that.Been there, done that.
No amount of fact finding could deter the supporters. They had their blinders on. Obvious lies, inconsistencies in statements, vile threats, vulgar boasts- nothing moved them to change their minds.Talk about being faithful.
And here we are.
So what happens next? What changes can we expect? I look around and I notice that my life might not change much.
But what about the populace that brought him to power? How will their life change?
What do they want? What can he deliver?
More importantly, can he deliver?
Three scenarios come to mind.
He might deliver what he promised. Which is next to impossible- build a wall? Make Mexico pay for it? Have Muslims profiled? Rethink NAFTA? None of those things can be executed...but assuming he does, America's standing on the international stage would be massively damaged and our economy would suffer and our global clout would be severely compromised.
If he does not deliver on his promises on the wall, NAFTA,jobs,immigration...his supporters, the ones that brought him to where he is, would be disillusioned and then the whole thing would have served no purpose.
The last scenario is the most unlikely. That he would shape up and become the kind of President who would usher in a new era..blah blah blah...not happening.
I don't even want to talk about the racial and ethnic profiling and related issues that might crop up now that there is precedent set by the President elect himself.
So what do we do now? From hope and change,we've come to the bleak expectation that things don't change- change isn't good, atleast not the kind envisioned by the President elect.
But hope? Hope lingers. As Desmond Tutu says," Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness".
