I'm reading this book called 'The Knowledge Deficit' by E.D.Hirsch... Very interesting and insightful.
American students are getting creamed when tested for math and comprehension skills and this guy had a very interesting perspective...he says language(the written, spoken version) and math( using the base ten method) are fairly recent INVENTIONS in human history and not logical evolutionary steps as one could assume .. so to extrapolate that fallacy and say humans can developmentally acquire these skills in due time is to exacerbate the problem...these are learned skills unlike walking and talking which were evolutionary steps in human development....so my point is when man randomly put sounds together and came up with words for things around him..he named a rose,a rose..if he had named it a donkey...it would still have smelled as sweet right?!
Anyway I digress. I was reading an article on Yahoo about a woman who was angered by her mother having multiple abortions because she had some health issues which would have jeopardized her life if she continued with her pregnancy and this woman felt that her mother had killed her siblings and prevented her from having a fuller life. This after her mother explained to her that she was her miracle baby and that the mother almost died having her....
While more preventive methods on the part of the mother would have been a good idea and while innumerable women do have abortions very flippantly, this specific woman's recriminations against her mother felt very unjust to me...what if in the course of another pregnancy, the mother had died? What would this woman's life have been then?
One of the commenters used the term'pro abortion which is why I even started typing this post! See, I meant it when I said I digressed. When you substitute the word choice with the word abortion, the whole term acquires a sinister meaning and significance- almost like saying when abortion is on the table, you are compelled to take it,you do not have the choice to walk away and continue the pregnancy...like abortion is being forced on you no matter what you want.
Going back to the current usage of pro choice makes it sound far more benign and far less restrictive...which in actuality is the case.
So if one decides to make a subtle, ahem, change in how the pro life people call themselves...let's call them,say..anti choice?
What kind of image springs up to you mind? For me, it conjures up the image of a person in shackles...
Don't mistake me, human life is precious and should be safeguarded under any circumstance but withdrawing the choice from the very person whose responsibility it is to decide,is unfair, unjust and seriously ,makes it seem like the woman's capability to decide for herself is being questioned. Her very intelligence, her sense of justice, her judgement is being questioned...like my previous post mentioned, the value of a woman's sexuality can be tarnished by a male, and the right to what happens after is also decided by someone else?
Words aren't mere letters strung together..they carry the weight of what they mean..never to be taken lightly...like someone in the farce that is an election campaign this year wants us to...so please think before throwing words out there be it on paper or verbally or in cyberspace. It can come back to haunt us or at the least,it is bad karma...
