Spoke to a dear friend after a looooong time-about two years we think.
But it was like we spoke to each other yesterday. That is  what is special about good friends-time is not significant. There are no awkward silences in the conversation-we were almost talking over each other to fill each other in on our lives and its goings-on.
We met in school (post graduate school-well what is called college back where we came from),fresh out of engineering college, and saw each other for the last time at her wedding almost 2 1/2 years later-but we have managed to keep in touch albeit sporadically through the years.Though we both live here,we haven't been able to meet-I live on the west coast and she on the east and that has made it a project to be undertaken sometime soon, but never actually realised for a long while now.
She was always a bit of an introvert and I,the loudmouth, but fundamentally we are alike-I think we were brought up the same way.A lot of the conversation today was about it finally hitting us that we are almost senior citizens now-no I'm kidding-we are both 40 and boy,are we unhappy about it!!
The forgetfulness that both of us had misdiagnosed as early stage Alzheimer's turns out to be just one of the vagaries of old age!We both agreed that we too, like our parents, have become a little too set in our ways, and will probably get a earful about our intransigence from our kids in the not so distant future. We concurred that going back to India and settling down there is going to be a tough thing,we probably might not do it at all.I know,I know,it sounds pretty boring right - like we just sat there say yes to everything the other person said!
No,it was actually refreshing to be able to speak with someone who knew you when you were just kid in college and has,in a way, lived an almost similar, parallel life and therefore come to the same conclusions about life in general  as you have.Makes you feel not crazy after all!!
Also, she was the one who encouraged me to blog!
So,Shany, this one goes out to you!!
Hope we will bite the bullet and go back home sometime in the future and probably meet in person more often!!
