My husband and I love  dim sum and usually go to this one place nearby where the choice is pretty good, service is quick and efficient.
We were there with the kids and I noticed something and found it amusing enough that I had to share.
One of the guidebooks we read about France mentioned the fact that unlike the US,most stores in France have employees who are NOT told that the customer is king.So you are advised not to waltz into the store expecting a warm greeting and somebody serving you with pleasure. You are told to sound apologetic for having intruded upon the person's time and request humbly to be helped with whatever you need and especially ASK before touching the wares!
SCARY-but not so much if you are from India-people working in stores there  have made it a fine art-the  art of ignoring customers, glaring them down if they dare to ask for help, and if you deign to help them,be rude enough to ask the customer if they can afford what they are looking at,or if they will fit into the apparel they seem interested in!
So this restaurant has this one guy who can be loosley termed a waiter-he dresses like one-but all he does is clear tables and reset them, bring the menu cards and sometimes answer questions. This last thing he does very ingeniously-he NEVER answers a question with words and very rarely with gestures.Today, for example,we asked to have forks to eat with and he did not acknowledge the request in any way.I was not even sure he had heard it,but sure enough,we got the forks soon.
He is a permanent fixture in this place-we have been going there for almost five years and he has been there all the time-he does not seem to have aged at all.I have never seen him smile, acknowledge anyone or even talk to the other people in the restaurant.
I know nothing is wrong with him otherwise. He does his work very capably,no fumbling or mishandling things. He understands what you want perfectly and is well groomed and well put to gether-so I am thinking nepotism is at work!!
Ironically his name seems to be Oscar-not that he is a grouch or anything, but somehow,it fits!!
