Today is our 15th  wedding anniversary and we just exchanged cards-the funny kind-it was tough finding a genuinely funny card with no references to bodily functions and such. The coincidence was that both of us had gotten each other funny cards-but sensibly funny.(I found a card that says on the front-I like your butt, and inside except when it talks?!-YUK!!!)-Did not buy that one!!
Anyway the one he got me said something about how one needs love to make a marriage work on the front of the card.Open it and on the left inside page it says -"and patience and perseverance"
...and lists a long set of things needed for a marriage to succeed,to the point where you almost start worrying you don't have a good marriage, and then, the inside right  page says,"Luckily,we have it all!!"
Mine to him says,on the outside-"This anniversary,I am regifting"-and on the inside it says,"I am giving my heart to you again!"
Anyway, after 15 years,it seems we have settled into our own rhythm of things-how we live life and how we work together as an unit.I think it is critical that we stand together in some situations and apart in others.

Kahlil Gibran's poem comes to mind:

Love one another, but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf.
Sing and dance together and be joyous.
But let each one of you be alone,
Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.
Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping.
For only the hand of life can contain your hearts.
And stand together yet not too near together;
For the pillars of the temple stand apart.
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.
Let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.
Love one another, but make not a bond of love.
-"The Prophet"

So,yes,We try to keep the distance and yet stand together-I don't try to make him talk too much and he doesn't try to make me stop-so there!!
