This one was inspired by my husband.i just mentioned what I noticed and he went,"There is your next blog post!".
The gospel on Thanksgiving day was about the ten lepers whom Jesus cured and only one returned to thank him. A curious aside in the story is a single sentence- he was a Samaritan. Very matter of fact but very significant.
It struck me then that in quite a few of his parables, the protagonist turns out to be a tax collector,or a prostitute or a Samaritan or some outsider. Basically the hero of most of his stories turn out to be not in the mainstream, not part of the majority - in short- someone who does not belong. But in each case, they end up doing good - like Zaccheus did, giving up his very occupation, or the good Samaritan, helping a traveller in need.
So there we have it. Jesus tongue in cheek, telling us that outsiders are as good as or even better than the inner clique?
So when people who are, I'm using this word tongue in cheek, fervent believers insist that it is only they who will knock on the pearly gates, don't take their for word for it. And when they insist that everything has to go their way because their God says so, do not believe them...their God begs to differ. When they claim persecution because of their beliefs, remember, their God, looks at the heart, how you are willing to accept everyone and be fair and just and love your neighbor and do good and be a shining beacon on the hill. Not a narrow minded person checking things off a list go make sure you ' follow' the commandments.
