What's wrong with being confident?

So minor follow up to my previous post before I move on- yesterday I did not recieve the customary kiss goodbye from you- know- who and decided to do it myself, and my better half who deligently reads( or,is, ahem, made to read) my posts hadn't read that post yet  and apparently was nonplussed at my sudden display of affection!! He finally managed to read it yesterday evening and understood why things happened the way they happened!

Anyway, when you have two kids who constantly fight over what music channel needs to be playing on the car stereo every time you are out with the two of them, you either tune it out or you start listening. And then despite yourself, you start listening and humming along  and paying attention to the lyrics and taking some meaning out of them. My husband however tells me he never listens to lyrics. Some Tamil lyrics are mind blowingly simple and can move you to tears. I loved the song ' Netru naan parthathum' from Jeeva, the cricket movie. Just an example, but obviously my husband doesn't listen so...
Back to what I was saying..This Demi Lovato song pops up very often on all the pop (pun intended) channels....another segue- my car, the Prius has six channels preset on it. Four pop channels, one classical for the Bach afficanado, and one NPR channel for me which I'm forbidden from listening to when my husband is driving because, he, apparently finds it grating on his nerves what with the world seemingly going to the dogs! I get back by prohibiting him from listening to Classical horrors when I am in the car because, assuredly, it is grating on my nerves to listen to screechy violins and screechier sopranos... But, if the kids are in the car, the problem is solved. Neither parents gets their wish, but there is a mighty tussle about which pop channel is going to be on....with the little one leaping forward to change channels time and again.
So back to Demi Lovato- one of her newest songs is called 'Confident' and it is a toe tapper for sure. The chorus goes something like, ' what's wrong with being(3) confident?', and that made me look up.
I went and checked the song out on YouTube hoping the video was all about  empowering females and that kind of thing
and not about shedding clothes or some nonsense! It wasn't. But it also wasn't about women becoming rocket scientists and such.  She took the middle road, if I might call it that and went all gangster on us.But hey it's ok. The very question started me thinking...
Women have come so far in terms of equality in the last century. I was reading a book about Sophia Duleep Singh, Ranjit Singh's granddaughter, whom the British kept safely at bay in the United Kingdom in order to keep their control over the Punjab, was a suffragist. Her grandmother was instrumental in having her father Duleep Singh ascend the throne after his father Ranjit Singh's death. But the young Raja's power was constantly in jeopardy because of infighting and the British, with their usual political finesse stepped in and under the pretext of protecting him, pulled the rug from under him and annexed the Punjab. His mother , who was his regent was removed from his presence, he was eventually moved to London, and the careful eye of Queen Victoria, was transformed into a British subject and prevented from returning to his homeland, because the British knew that that would possibly be their death knell in the sub continent.
Duleep Singh's children were completely British in their outlook and only a few of them, much
later in life even deigned to find out their rich history. My point is, with a grandmother who was a kingmaker, one would assume that Sophia would be a firebrand. But, society wouldn't let her be one. She actively participated in all sorts of protests but there were royal orders that she should never be arrested or held in custody for any reason...the sole purpose being  the denial of any prominence to a Royal Princess and her place in society.
While we have achieved so much in this world since the princess' time , women still have road blocks thrust before them constantly in an effort to remind us that we have a place in society and that we are overstepping our limits all the time. Confidence is considered pushy. Forceful women are considered harpies. Women in control are considered control freaks...when a women achieves something, there is always a but, never an in spite of.
So kudos to those women who soldier on, despite the naysayers, and who don't find anything wrong with being confident! Keep it up!
Next up, Selena Gomez's ' Good for you' lyrics will be analyzed for you!!!!

Not today, not today!!

  1. Kavi excellent reflections. Very true. When it comes to women confidence is considered synonymous to arrogance. Expecting the next Selena Gomez's (I dont know who is that) song
