Bare none

Saw Kim Kardashian's photo spread in the news these last few days, and the recriminations and felicitations that followed and figured I needed to put my two cents in.
For one, curbing one's liberty is so not what living in America is about and feminism is not about fighting that either. That being said, one needs to be able to draw the line at where one seems to fall off the cliff in pursuit of liberty.
Feminism is not about wanting to be on par with men.We cannot possible be on par with them. Obviously men are physically stronger than women, and that is a limitation we cannot blast through. I know some women get riled when it is mentioned that they are not physically as strong as men. One of the most common comebacks I've gotten is that women can birth a baby, and men can't.
Fair enough, but that actually proves my point.Men and women cannot physically try to match up and be the same.
Feminism is about being free to do what we are capable of doing without our gender being held against us. Things like getting a degree,or a promotion at work,or a research grant in school. Things like being able to travel alone in a bus without getting suggestive looks and words. Things like being able get home unmolested if we get drunk at a party( which a man is definitely assured of!). Things like getting help from our better halves with household chores and child care. Opportunities where gender is insignificant, but can sometimes be used against us unfairly.
But again, having the freedom to do whatever we want need not translate to doing whatever scatterbrained thing we want .That isn't feminism, that is stupidity and an utter lack of self respect. Case in point, the aforementioned lady baring all. What is the  point being proved by her disrobing? That we as women can bare all? Is that of any worth? What does baring all get a woman? Respect for being naked? I think not.
I was jokingly telling my husband that if Sheryl Sandberg bared all or Indra Nooyi did, that would be newsworthy. They have done more for the cause of feminism than Kim Kardashian's and her ilk
could ever possibly hope to do,but obviously they wouldn't want to bare all because they don't need to. By breaking the glass ceiling, they have proved to us women, that we can equal men if we have the capability and the will to stay the course. What do you think stops most women from doing what Kim Kardashian did? It isn't prudishness,it is a sense of decorum.
I don't think you find too many bare all pictures of men- they don't seem to have as much of a demand as the ones of women. Why? Nude pictures of women tend to titillate viewers. That is about it. There is no lesson to be learnt,no inspiration to be acquired,no message to be broadcast other than thumbing your nose at people who have something against you.
Katie Couric had a colonostomy on national TV. That was a brave thing to do. Pictures of celebrities breast feeding in public is a great way to encourage new mothers to make the best choice for their child's  nutrition. A cancer ravaged woman's shaven head is an inspiration. A battle scarred veteran's amputated limb is a reminder of the sacrifice he or she made for our country. Dr.Druker and Gert
Boyle sporting tattoos about fighting cancer is a picture worth a thousand words. But Kim Kardashian balancing a wineglass on her butt is the equivalent of a sideshow freak with a weird   talent not worth emulating. Full disclosure:I did see the pictures, but that explains my previous comment about the sideshow freak.
Anyway, hopefully very few people take this as an inspiration and decide to go full Monty! The world has too many plagues to take care off without having to worry about Kim Kardashian rip offs, pun intended!!
