Young love

After the post about mature love and companionship, I had to write about young love and I am assuming unrequited love.
I bought an used Saxon Math book for my son to use this year and unfortunately the book is scribbled all over-calculations mostly and wrong ones at that.Sometimes I want to get my hands on the kid in question and shake the kid up asking, "Haven't you heard of rough sheets before?"- I remember teachers in school asking us to draw a vertical line at the right corner of the page about two-thirds of the way out, to use for rough work.Apparently that is not in vogue here, so the kid managed to make the text book a never-ending rough sheet!
For a few lessons, I sat and painstakingly erased all the scribbles because I assumed my son would sneak a peek and cheat at math. But I noticed that most of the writing was calculations rather than answers per se. So I gave up erasing them. And I hit the mother lode on page 365!!
Two things- the book's previous owner is a girl! And she loves a boy called Eric!! There is  a cartoon balloon with 'I love Eric' written inside and the clarification that 'BF' means boyfriend and NOT best friend! When in doubt, etch it in your Math book!! I actually find it sweet and endearing. This 12 or 13 year old discovering love, maybe for the first time?
I am assuming it is unrequited because she needs to explain to the dolt, albeit surreptitiously that he is not just a best friend but her boyfriend!! I don't think he knows!! The poor thing!! I am not sure about how long ago she used this book. The minute I came across the writing, my curiosity was piqued and I wanted to know how the whole thing ended. Are the two together? Did he finally figure out her feelings? Did they break up already? Or, did she never pick up the nerve to tell him?Did her love remain unrequited forever? Alas, I am still in the dark! I don't even know the girl's name. For being such a prolific scribbler, irony of ironies, she withheld her name. Or, maybe it is a boy?Ha ha!!
The book has so many hearts drawn on the pages, one would think it is Valentine's day everyday. So everyday, when I picked up the book to help my son,I used to think about the girl and wonder how things ended-until I hit page 379-not much farther away from page 365 right? There again, boldly emblazoned were the words, "I (heart image) Stephen"-dang!! She changed the guy!! In less than 14 pages- two lessons apart!! That was quick!
I only hope Eric never knew of his loss. And I only hope Stephen was more clued in. Otherwise, I am sure it's, "Bye, bye Stephen, hello ....someone else!"isn't it?
In the meanwhile,I keep turning the pages with a kind of morbid fascination, wondering if she is going to stun me with yet another change of boyfriend. So far, it does not seemed to have happened, but we have about a hundred more pages to go and that is about seven more opportunities to jilt someone, by her estimation!!
So,Mills and Boon be damned, here is a little love story played out entirely in scribbles, but with enough suspense and surprise intermingled that I am spell bound and eagerly awaiting the next installment!!
