Connecticut does it this time!It was Oregon last Tuesday, makes one wonder who will go out and shoot someone tomorrow.
There are far more dangerous countries than the only existing Superpower, but only here does a madman have unrestricted access to guns and can go out and kill people at random.
Gun aficionados have a lot of harebrained theories as to how guns don't kill, people do-but ask yourself, what kind of carnage can a knife wielding madman inflict versus the carnage a gun toting dolt can come up with.By sheer numbers, the gun fellow can run amok.A bullet is far more lethal and can kill with more accuracy than a knife.Even by numbers,a gun can kill more people in a minute than a knife could in five.It is not very easy to overpower a crazy guy with a gun because in the three seconds needed, he can get three bullets off.But a guy with a knife? Can be considered.Remember the Wyoming kid who knifed his Dad at the community college he worked in?The death toll?Three.
Also ,this whole theory of protecting oneself being the reason to own a gun?Balderdash!!It is a reflection on the state of affairs of this country that the citizens feel threatened enough to own guns. What are we doing wrong?I have lived here for 15 years and have never felt like,"Dang!!Wish I had a gun!!It is scary in here!!"
I come from India-which is not close in any way or form to the U.S.Far more poorer people, far more corruption, less resources to go around, deep, unthinkable poverty, hunger, unemployment, the sheer unfairness of life.....the list goes on.It is the perfect crucible for any dominant mental issues to come to the fore.Even perfectly justifiable reasons-forget insanity. But how many random mass shooting have ever occurred in that country with three times the population as the U.S?I can't think of even one. What is missing in that equation?Access to arms-pure and simple.I am sure there are far more convincing examples from maybe other countries, but I can only offer India.
Last week,a 11 year old here in Oregon tried to carjack a vehicle with a 22 year old woman inside.Guess what he had? No,no,not a knife-a gun!!
How many more lives will have to be lost before we realize that our worst threat is our imagination?
Even now I read some of the comments people had written about the Connecticut shooting-too few even mention gun control. All the usual excuses-if not guns, they will have bombs, crazy people will always have a way to kill,if more people were armed, this would not happen as often-how?Like someone pulls out a gun,and 200 other people pull their's out in self defense and then what? The guy slinks away?More likely the damage will be doubled rather than avoided.
So with all the civilizing we have done, all the education we have managed to have, all the technological advances we have made,we still need guns to feel secure? Why?This is the most advanced country in the whole world, but if the excuse that one needs guns to feel secure holds good-fundamentally,we have then, been doing something wrong.
Two things come to mind-one,the need for guns to make one feel secure and two,the madmen running around shooting strangers. As for the second one-why the need to kill strangers?Random people?Even Andre Brevik had some reason, however unforgivable for his rampage. But most mass shootings in the US seems unprovoked and unexplained.James Holmes,Jacob Roberts...even today's-kindergarteners?How could you?Not valuing your life is different-how dare you trivialize another person's life?Which begs the question-what are the values we have and give our children? That another person's life is of no value? And that we live in a crazy evil world and need guns to keep our life intact? This ,while living in the (supposedly) most civilized country in the world?
We need a swerve -soon,very soon before our disregard for others and the utter selfishness which clouds our intellect-causes us to destroy our society or disfigure it beyond salvageability.
