Sometimes we have regrets in life that might seem trivial to others but mean a lot to us?I have one such regret.
My husband did his masters degree at ASU and used to talk about a room mate of his who was from my hometown. They got along well together. And once I met the guy when he had flown down to India,I was amazed to find that he and I had done our kindergarten together a few million years ago, back when our school had been co-educational.
Later, when my husband and I got married and moved to Oregon(he had already started working for the chip company-you know the one I mean-not the kind we eat!!),he was the one who picked us up,he was the one who had stocked our pantry and fridge and dropped in occasionally for a chat and a meal.We did not hang out together-a married couple and a single guy don't gel actually, but we did meet quite often and I distinctly remember our trip to a chinese restaurant ,when my husband drove and our friend kept yelling at him for his miserable parallel parking skills-because he was the one who taught my husband to drive!!!
He is this jovial, loud, opinionated, extremely smart person(he has doctorate in computer science and is a professor at a really famous college in the west) ,but a very down to earth, sweet man.He is diametrically opposite to my husband(I mean in terms of conviviality!),but they get along extremely well.He used to call one of my husband's friends,Charless Boobless!!
Anyway,he moved after a while and we have kept in touch very sporadically.
When I had my first kid,he happened to be in town and visited us with a huge cake.I was in my worst post-partum depression days, with a colicky baby, and though I had my parents to help,I wasn't coping very well, the days looked so dreary and blurred one into another and ....,well,I don't know if that is a good enough excuse, but I did not even offer him dinner that day.
I used to insist that he have dinner with us EVERY time he came home, and  that one time-I still regret that so much.He hasn't been this side after that and I have not had the opportunity to make up for my inhospitable behaviour yet,but hopefully-one day in the near future-there will be a phone call letting us know that he is dropping by!!I have a menu prepared already!
Luke,if you happen to see this post, book your tickets!!
